Headed by Christian Fellner (better known as Felly or Young Fel) the recently formed Mermaid Gang is a group of friends who collaborate to create original songs pulling from various influences. Based on the University of Southern California’s campus, Mermaid Gang’s members are ready to turn up the tunes.

It became clear the show was far from sold out. The crowd stood about 50 but the energy was through the roof as everyone waited for their favorite rappers to take the stage.

Andy Nystrom opened the show, debuting his new music from his album DFTN. His energetic, pop style songs got the crowd dancing quickly. He continued to engage the crowd by taking selfies with fans while performing his up beat set list.

Following Andy was Trip Carter, a member of the Mermaid Gang. He performed a number of his own songs, which featured hard-hitting lyrics and rhythmic beats. The crowd fed off of his energy for the entirety of his set list.

Next up was GYYPS, Felly’s best friend and long time collaborator. Although the crowds energy was already high, as soon as he took the stage everyone became ecstatic. Playing a mix of old and new songs, and even taking some requests from the small crowd, GYYPS had everyone jumping to his real-life lyrics and heavy beats. The energy and good vibes were tangible as he continued to perform his set list.

Finally Felly took the stage, backed up by a live band, which consisted of both GYYPS and Trip Carter. The addition of the live band made the rap show one of a kind. The crowd was immediately enthralled by Felly’s sincere and energetic stage presence. His smooth reggae inspired beats had the crowd swaying throughout the night. It became obvious he fed off of the vibe of the show when choosing his set list as the concert progressed. Playing Sun and Good Loving purely because he felt the crowd would appreciate it based off of the vibes he was receiving. He kept the energy up throughout the show by playing a mix of both old classics like Schoolzones, from his 2014 album Milk & Sugar, and new hits like Desert Eagle ft. GYYPS, off of his 2016 Young Fel EP.

Keeping the energy up, Felly and GYYPS performed their new single Ali for the encore, adding afterwards they would be in the back to meet the intimate crowd after the show.

The Mermaid Gang played off the unique energy of the crowd making the show one of a kind. They are finishing up their US tour this week with the last few shows in Texas.
