Over the past year, it wouldn’t be a surprise to scroll through TikTok and come across a video with Surf Mesa’s “ily (I love you baby)” playing dreamily in the background. It doesn’t matter if you’re poolside, beachside, driving, or having an impromptu dance party- every occasion is an occasion to play Surf Mesa’s music.
Now, Surf Mesa is working with other household names like FLETCHER and Maddison Beer. We can’t get enough of his latest release “Another Life” with FLETCHER and Josh Golden that already has over three million streams on Spotify alone. The sky’s the limit for this Seattle native. How did you see your fans connect with your music when you could not connect with them in person?
During COVID it was really inspiring to see people make cool videos with my music! All over social media I was finding random people using my songs with creative ways to integrate them in TikTok’s and Instagram reels.
As a fast growing artist, what is a goal you hope to accomplish, and how do you plan on achieving it?
As far as goals, I don’t see a definite finish line. I hope that with this strange journey, I can fulfill a catalog of music that is authentic and feels true to my sound.
How has “ily (i love you baby)” becoming a viral sensation influenced your musical career?
This song has brought lots of freedom and opportunity into my career. There are a lot of ways I could have gone to step after the release of ILY, but I’m choosing to release music that still feels true to myself which is the most fulfilling way to go about this opportunity.
Who or what inspires your songwriting process?
There are a lot of ways that a song can come together. I learned this from my friends Loud Luxury. They once explained to me that a song can be “Frankensteined” together. Meaning anything can come first. Whether it’s the vocals, a chord progression, a sample, or a real life experience that brings inspiration. It’s important to expose yourself to all forms of inspiration!
You released a plethora of songs this past year! How have you seen yourself grow as an artist when reflecting on past releases compared to your latest release “Another Life”?
I’ve grown and developed my sound that feels authentic to me and of my taste! With that, you will find beautiful melodies and atmospheres included in the production of “Another Life.”
What has been your favorite song to perform live?
I made an edit of “Somewhere” with Gus Dapperton that mashes up with one of my favorite artists, Odd Mob, and it goes way too hard. Always fun playing that one. Aside from an edit, I love playing “Lose My Mind” and my remix of Shawn Mendes’ “Wonder.”
What has it been like collaborating with artists like FLETCHER, Josh Golden, and Madison Beer?
All beautiful people with great energy in the studio. It’s really inspiring to hear and learn from all these different types of paths that have come to collide with my own.
